Stephen B. Hanauer received his bachelors degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, and his medical degree, with honors, from the University of Illinois in Chicago, IL. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine, as well as his fellowship in gastroenterology, at the University of Chicago, where he is currently Chief of the Section of Gastroenterology and Nutrition, and Director of The Logan Center for GI Clinical Research and Co-Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research Center.
Dr. Hanauer is the author or co-author of hundreds of peer-reviewed journal articles, books and book chapters, abstracts, monographs, and editorials. He also designed and maintains a 5000-patient database for the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Registry. Dr. Hanauer is editor-in-chief of Nature Clinical Practice Gastroenterology & Hepatology and serves on the editorial boards of numerous other medical journals, including the American Journal of Gastroenterology, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, and the American Journal of Medicine.
Dr. Hanauer is the prior Chairman of the International Organization for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IOIBD). He also served as a Councillor for Clinical Research on the Governing Board of the American Gastroenterology Association (AGA) and chaired the IMIBD and Clinical Practice Section of the AGA Council. He is currently a member of the ACG Board of Trustees.
